IMAGE FORMAT GUIDE

AVIF explained.

AVIF is a modern image format with support for transparency and efficient compression. A JPG or PNG copy can help when the app receiving the image does not accept AVIF.

When to choose AVIF

Try AVIF for a website that supports it and compare file size and appearance against WebP or JPG. Quality is adjustable. Local encoding may take noticeably longer on a phone, especially for large images, so start with a small batch.

What to expect

AVIF output uses lossy color compression while retaining the alpha channel. Still images are supported; animated sequences are rejected. Pixrelio does not preserve HDR information, metadata or embedded color profiles. Smaller output is not guaranteed.

Choose the right alternative

Choose AVIF to JPG for an opaque photo intended for a familiar upload form. Use AVIF to PNG for transparent artwork when avoiding another lossy encoding step matters more than file size. Keep your original file for future edits.

Support in Pixrelio

Import and export still AVIF. Local WebAssembly codecs provide AVIF output and a decoding fallback when native browser decoding is unavailable. A current browser with Web Workers and WebAssembly is required.

Select images and settings on a converter page, then open your dedicated result page to preview and download. Original files stay on your device. Read about temporary local storage.
