IMAGE FORMAT GUIDE

WebP explained.

WebP combines support for photographic images and transparency. It is useful for website assets, but some older upload forms still request JPG or PNG.

When to choose WebP

Create WebP copies for a website or app that accepts the format. Adjust quality to balance detail and file size, then compare the actual output against the original. A smaller file is possible; it is not guaranteed for every source.

What to expect

Pixrelio exports WebP with lossy color compression and retains transparency. Fine lines and small text may change at lower quality settings. Animated WebP is not supported. The local codec is used when the browser cannot encode WebP natively.

Choose the right alternative

Convert WebP to JPG when an upload form rejects it and transparency is unnecessary. Choose PNG to retain transparency without introducing another lossy encoding step. AVIF is another web option, though it can take longer to encode on a phone.

Support in Pixrelio

Import still WebP and export adjustable-quality WebP. Processing happens locally, with original decoded dimensions. Animation, metadata and embedded color profiles are not retained.

Select images and settings on a converter page, then open your dedicated result page to preview and download. Original files stay on your device. Read about temporary local storage.
